What's it about
KK (Jagapathi Babu) is a businessman and lands in USA along with his daughter. Shailu (Anushka) is a youngster who leads passive life with mounting financial problems and taking care of her mother and her sister's son. KK moves into her neighborhood and he infuses 'hope' in her and changes her attitude towards the life. She slowly then falls in love with him. When she proposes to him, KK reveals his past - about his married life with Vidya (Bhumika) and the reason for his coming to USA.
Analysis
Director Dasaradh is one of the sensible directors in Tollywood. He proved his mettle with Santosham. But his latest offering, Swagatham, fails to impress. He tries to do the same trick that he did in his maiden venture. Copying the basic plot from Hindi blockbuster Kal Ho Naa Ho, Dasaradh presents same age-old 'one-guy-two-women' drama with loads of sentiment. He attempts to capitalize Jagapathi Babu's image of 'iddaru muddugummala murari' but doesn't bring novelty on to the screen.
The problem with the film lies in its treatment. When the story is not good or oft-repeated one, narration should be engrossing and brimming with energy. Also these kind of stories require superb music and rich production values to elevate the mood. But the work of music director RP Patnaik and cameraman Ramesh is less said the better. RP has failed in giving lilting tunes also his background score is nothing to rave about. While the first half is KHNH, the post interval drama resembles to that of Jagapathi Babu starrer Mavi Chiguru.
The script and screenplay has many pot holes. Entire first half is very passive.
Performances
Jagapathi Babu does the same role that he has been doing for years though he looks handsome and much younger. Bhumika gives one of her career best performances. Her chemistry with Jagapathi Babu looks fantastic. Their romantic episodes are the best part of the film. Anushka looks sexy but nothing much to talk about her acting. Arjun in a guest role is okay. Comedy is adequate. Allari Ravi Babu does the role of Homosexual and his jokes about 'map' and Bang-'Cock' are in bad taste.
Technically the film is too weak. None of the technicians' job is worth mentioning. Dasardh shows his mark and creativity in Jagapathi Babu and Bhumika's episode but he seems to have stuck at Santosham.
Bottom-line
Swagatham is mix of Kal Ho Na Ho and Mavi Chiguru. It is loaded with sentiment and fails to impress. Although the second half is okay, it finally turns out to be typical Jagapathi Babu's film - a 'man and two women' drama. Its success purely lies on how well the women audiences accept it?
