20-year-old Sophie Sheridan (Amanda Seyfried) lives with her doting mother Donna (Meryl Streep) on a small Greek island, where Donna runs the "Villa Donna." Sophie is going to marry Sky (Dominic Cooper), and wants her father to be present to "give her away", but does not know who he is; from Donna's diary of 20 years ago, she concludes he is one of three men Sam (Pierce Brosnan), Harry (Colin Firth), and Bill (Stellan Skarsgård) mentioned in it; she invites all three without telling Donna or Sky, and hopes to find out who is her father. All three come. It remains unclear who is the father, and after all three are considered one-third of her father.
In the past, when Sam and Donna were together, Sam had to leave because he was engaged to another woman. Unknown to Donna, he only left to break with that other woman and return, but Donna had already left with another man, after which Sam married the woman to whom he was engaged. He had two sons, but they divorced. He still loves Donna.
Bill and Harry are single, It is subtly suggested that Harry is gay,[5] as is his character in the original stage musical.
Donna's longtime friends, single, fun-loving writer Rosie (Julie Walters) and rich three-time divorcée Tanya (Christine Baranski) and two friends of Sophie's (Ashley Lilley and Rachel McDowall) also attend the wedding.
The wedding is Sophie's wish, Sky would rather have postponed it and travel first, Donna is loyal to Sophie but would be happy to cancel the wedding. When Sophie reveals to Sky that she invited her three potential fathers he is angry.
During the wedding ceremony Sophie and Sky decide to postpone the wedding, as Sky wanted all along, and to make a journey together. Sam proposes to Donna, arguing that if they marry right away the wedding party is not wasted, and so they do. Rosie is attracted to Bill who declines at first but later gives in
