The Spiderwick Chronicles English Movie Online

Rated: PG
Theatrical Release: Feb 14, 2008 Wide

Synopsis:

Based on the bestselling series of children's fantasy novels of the same name by Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi, THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES follows the adventures of the Grace family, newly transplanted from New York City to an inherited home in the remote New England woods. Angry with his mother (Mary-Louise Parker) about the move, the sulky Jared (Freddie Highmore) begin to explore the strange old house, and discovers a magical tome written by his great, great uncle Arthur Spiderwick (David Strathairn). Soon Jared and his twin brother, Simon (also played by Highmore with the aid of seamless special effects), are drawn into a realm of goblins, boggarts, and ogres--a reality that coexists with the human world. By the time the boys' older sister, Mallory (Sarah Bolger), is in on their secret, the siblings are steeped in a conflict with the evil shape-shifting ogre Mulgarath (Nick Nolte), who will stop at nothing to get Spiderwick's book. Directed by Mark Waters (THE HOUSE OF YES, MEAN GIRLS) and scripted in part by lauded filmmaker John Sayles (THE SECRET OF ROAN INISH), SPIDERWICK succeeds as an engaging kid-oriented movie that also offers up genuine thrills and chills for adults. Highmore and Bolger impressively mask their British and Irish accents, respectively, and display a convincing brother/sister bond, while Martin Short and Seth Rogen provide comic relief as the voices of unlikely CGI allies. Intentionally smaller in scope than other like-minded literary adaptations such as THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA and THE GOLDEN COMPASS, SPIDERWICK is rooted in a beautifully earthy, antique aesthetic that provides the perfect setting for its likable protagonists and bizarre-yet-naturalistic creatures.

DRILLBIT TAYLOR tells the story of three nerdy adolescents who, on their very first day of high school, find themselves the target of a merciless, near psychotic bully. The friends band together and pool their funds to hire a personal bodyguard, Drillbit Taylor (Owen Wilson). Taylor, a homeless beach bum and AWOL army soldier, plans to con the kids just long enough to pull together the money needed to amscray off to Canada. A momentary flash of a conscience and a growing crush on a teacher at the boys' high school, however, compels Drillbit to stick around, do the right thing, and ultimately save the day. The movie is fluff to the extreme, and because it's from the duo of Seth Rogen and Judd Apatow it's easy to long for more. There's a remarkably talented comic cast here, though, that includes, among others, Upright Citizens Brigade veteran Matt Walsh, former Daily Show correspondent Beth Littleford, and indie favorite Frank Whaley. And while it never reaches the near poetic heights of vulgarity to be found in SUPERBAD and KNOCKED UP, one can sense Rogen and Apatow's supreme wit poking around the edges of the film. Where DRILLBIT does succeed, however, is as a fun movie for pre- and early-adolescent boys. KNOCKED UP and 40-YEAR-OLD VIRGIN deal with some adult subject matter, meaning the plots are driven by issues that 13-year-olds most likely can not relate to, and SUPERBAD is raunchy to the point where parents might not want their kids to see it until they can at least drive. DRILLBIT, on the other hand, strikes a nice middle ground, as it deals with the age-old problem of the high school bully and throws in just enough raunch & roll to keep the sleepover rowdy until dawn.

21 English Movie Online

Rated: PG-13
Runtime: 2 hrs 3 mins
Theatrical Release: Mar 28, 2008 Wide

Synopsis:

Inspired by a true story, 21 mixes Las Vegas casino wheeling and dealing with college-kid angst: think OCEAN'S ELEVEN via THE PAPER CHASE. Kevin Spacey is crafty MIT professor Micky Rosa, who trains brainiac students to count cards and then flies them out to Vegas to raid the blackjack tables between classes. At first they rake in a bundle, but then catch the unwanted attention of tough-guy security chief, Cole Williams (Laurence Fishburne) who wants to prove himself before he's replaced by face recognition software. Super math genius Ben Campbell (Jim Sturgess) originally joins the ring in order to come up with the $300,000 he needs for tuition money, but he's also gaga over the ring's resident babe, Jill (Kate Bosworth). When he finds out Professor Rosa hasn't been dealing entirely from a straight deck, Ben's high-end shopping spree dreams turn sour (though card counting is not illegal) and the battle of wits is on, no second chances given. Spacey is in his preternaturally calm, morally compromised element, stealing scenes left and right; Fishburne brings the hangdog depth; and everything bubbles over the 24-karat rocks, courtesy of director Robert Luketic (LEGALLY BLONDE). 21 is based on the bestseller BRINGING DOWN THE HOUSE by Ben Mezrich.

Sirf Hindi Movie Online

Cast: Kay Kay Menon, Manisha Koirala, Sonali Kulkarni, Ranveer Shorey
Direction: Rajaatesh Nayar

PLEASE, don't we know what life in a metro is all about by now. Haven't we done the Mumbai salsa several times now. Just let big city blues be, unless, there's still an undiscovered Woody Allen out there to do a New York diary on amchi Mumbai, saddi Dilli, namma Chennai.

Sirf is again a city document, which encapsulates the unfulfilled longings of a bunch of characters who try to fulfil their dreams in the vast, abyss-like metro. There's Manisha and Kay Kay: a rich, successful couple who have everything but quality time for each. There's Sonali and Ranvir: a hard-pressed, middle-class couple with a love story that's losing out on the struggle to earn money. There's Pravin Dabbas and Rituparno Sengupta: a small town couple, struggling with the culture clash of permissive cosmosexuals. And there's a young couple dreaming of finding a roof in the unaffordable city in order to get married. Somewhere down the sleepy comings and goings, their lives get intertwined and salvation does lie round the corner. But for that, you'll have to sit up and shake the yawns, since the director fails to invest energy in his drama. What's more irritating is the sudden twist in the seemingly normal tale about a bunch of happiness seekers. Nah! Kay Kay couldn't get crooked, ekdum se, could he? And a Jabalpur girl (Rituparno) couldn't be such an old-fashioned nag, could she?

Watch out for Manisha Koirala. It's a comeback that calls for a bunch of better roles.

Black And White Hindi Movie - Online

Black and White (drama)
Cast: Anil Kapoor, Shefali Shah, Anurag Sinha
Direction: Subhash Ghai

For a filmmaker who scaled Bollywood’s heights as the quintessential Sapnon ka Saudagar to suddenly shift gear is indeed a valiant bid. And Subhash Ghai deserves kudos for daring this switch in the high noon of his career, since experimentation is generally the forte of GenXers and Bratpack dreamers. Suddenly, and surprisingly, Ghai sets aside the grandeur of films like Ram Lakhan, Khalnayak to step into the difficult terrain of cinema verite. And no, he doesn’t flounder and fall flat, despite a few loose strands and false notes that hold back the film from becoming a searing document of our tumultuous times. Black and White is a thought-provoking film that challenges the state’s stereotypical formula to combat terrorism. And somewhere between its moments of light and shade, it holds a glimmer of hope and humanism: yes, fanatics can be cured, terrorists can be tamed, secularism may live long.

The story is ostensibly based on the headline-grabbing case of the terrorist attack on Parliament, when a Delhi University professor (SAR Geelani) was held responsible for his links with the terrorists. Like Geelani, Professor Rajan Mathur (Anil Kapoor) too teaches Urdu in Zakir Hussain College and unwittingly becomes associated with a suicide bomber (Anurag Sinha) who comes all the way from Afghanistan to blow up the Red Fort on Independence Day. Nomair Qazi, the bomber, poses as a victim of the Gujarat riots and wins the sympathy of the professor and his activist wife (Shefali Shah), as he takes up residence with his supposed grandfather (Habib Tanvir) in the bustling by-lines of Chandni Chowk. The jehadi has fourteen days to plan his suicide mission and conveniently uses the simple professor and his emotionally exuberant wife to gain entry in the high-security environs of the Lal Qila. But before that, he must learn the more important lessons of life. Source: TimesOfIndia

An Empress and the Warriors

2008 isn’t the Year of the Rat, it’s the Year of the Martial Arts Epics. In the span of a few months, fans of Chinese cinema will be treated to the biggest number of films featuring big stars, big budgets, and big set pieces the likes of which they’ve never seen before. Tony Ching’s “An Empress and the Warriors” is the second of the epics to be released, following in the footsteps of 2007’s “The Warlords”. Still to come: Andy Lau and Maggie Q. in “Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon” and John Woo’s “Red Cliff”. You can even add the Jet Li-Jackie Chan Hollywood collaboration “The Forbidden Kingdom” to the list if you’re so inclined.

“An Empress and the Warriors” wastes little time jumping into the thick of the battlefield. When we first see him, orphan turned uber General Muyong (Donnie Yen) is leading the charge into battle alongside the King of Yan, while Princess Feier (Kelly Chen) stays behind to tend to the wounded. After the king is wounded, and then later assassinated by his ne’er-do-well nephew Wu Ba (Xiadong Guo), a power vacuum must be filled. Although the King had told the Princess that Muyong should take in the case of his death, Muyong has other ideas — he promises to train Feier as a warrior, so that she may rule the kingdom.

Alas, things don’t quite work out as Muyong had planned. Wu Ba is none too pleased about having his power grab ruined by a chick, and being the conniving power hungry jackal that he is, sets assassins upon Feier during her training in the woods. She escapes, but just barely, thanks largely to the impromptu assistance of woodland medicine man Duan (Leon Lai), who apparently has been spending his time collecting medicinal herbs in the woods and, er, creating wondrous (and incredibly deadly) booby traps just in case he needs to, you know, save a pretty Princess from a wild pack of assassins. Hey, don’t say it can’t possibly happen, because it just did!

The casting for “An Empress and the Warriors” must have been a cinch. “Let’s see, we need a sensitive, handsome guy for the Princess to fall in love with. Hey, is Leon Lai available?” Then there’s this: “Man, we gotta get an action hero for the battle scenes, and he has to have street cred with the kids. Say, is Donnie Yen already taken?” As for the Empress role, it probably went something like this: “We need a spunky, pretty girl who can do martial arts. The Twins girls are booked until 2020? Dammit. Okay, let’s throw the dart at the board and see who wins the Princess Lotto.” Am I being facetious? Was casting the three leads more complex than that? Quite possibly, but probably not very likely.

To their credit, the three leads do what the script and director Tony Ching (”Naked Weapon”) asks of them well enough. They can play their characters in their sleep, and that might be the problem. The casting is so dead-on that there’s little room for surprises, growth, or much complexity; calling them one-note would be giving them too much credit. Of course, it doesn’t help that the script is painfully by the numbers. Everyone, from the evil nephew and his sycophantic General, are drawn so broadly that in an odd sort of way their thinness actually compliments the broad plot strokes in the script. Which leads us to below…

For an excruciatingly long period, the film simply stops to follow a wounded Feier as she lives and recuperates (and predictably, falls in love) with the very single Duan in his tree house. No, really. Duan lives in a series of complex, rigged tree structures, where he shares his pacifist views with the Princess. (We later come to learn that Duan wasn’t always the pure soul he purports to be.) The way he talks, one has to wonder if Duan gets a lot of pretty female soldiers as company, because he sure seems to have his speeches nicely rehearsed. The whole thing would make for a half-decent romance if it weren’t so ridiculously sugary that my teeth started to hurt.

Eventually, it’s back to the grindstone for our Princess, where she must snatch back the throne from her scheming cousin and save Yan from the jaws of defeat. But first, a slow-motion horse ride through the forest with Duan! Yes, I wish I was kidding, but I’m not. There is actually another 30 minutes left in “An Empress and the Warriors” — just in time for a balloon ride through the clouds as a love ballad soars, soars, and soars. And yes, I wish I was kidding you again, but once more, I’m not. Forget believability, we’ve just been dropped into a Cantonese pop song’s music video, boys and girls.

The film does manage to redeem itself somewhat with an action-packed third act that includes an over-the-top sequence where Donnie Yen takes on an entire army by himself. Unfortunately for fans of the action star, his ability to kick ass and not take names is greatly restricted by his battle armor, which, given Yen’s MMA fighting style, must make him feel like a monkey trapped in a cage. Still, once the lovely dovey stuff is out of the way, “An Empress and the Warriors” makes for decent viewing. It’s too bad the film was so plodding up to this point, with the script so overloaded by the insipid romance, but hey, as a member of the audience, I’ll take what I can get.

Tony Ching (director) / Tin Nam Chun, James Yuen (screenplay)

Kelly Chen … Yen Feier
Leon Lai … Duan Lan-quan
Xiaodong Guo … Wu Ba

Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay - Online

Rated: R
Theatrical Release: Apr 25, 2008 Wide
Synopsis:

Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay marks the triumphant return of these two hilarious, slacker anti-heroes. The movie stars John Cho (American Pie I & II, American Dreamz) as Harold and Kal Penn (Van Wilder 2: The Rise of Taj, Epic Movie) as Kumar, two stoners who can’t seem to get a break. Their last adventure found them traveling across country to find a White Castle hamburger in order to satisfy a weed-induced case of “the munchies.”

This time, the boys get themselves in trouble trying to sneak a bong on board a flight to Amsterdam. Now, being suspected of terrorism, they are forced to run from the law and try to find a way to prove their innocence. What follows is an irreverent and epic journey of deep thoughts, deeper inhaling and a wild trip around the world that is as “un-PC” as it gets. --© New Line Cinema
